Lakagígar is the correct name, as Laki mountain itself did not erupt, as fissures opened up on each side of it. Lakagígar is part of a volcanic system centered on the volcano Grímsvötn and including the volcano Þórðarhyrna. It lies between the glaciers of Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull, in an area of fissures that run in a southwest to northeast direction

Ófærufoss Waterfall in the Highlands of iceland The Ófærufoss waterfall can be found in central Iceland, and is situated in the Eldgjá chasm in the interior of the Eldgjá (Fire Gorge) area. Eldgjá is a 40 km long, 600 m wide (in some parts), and 200 m deep eruptive fissure that last erupted shortly after the Settlement period in 934. Ófærufoss is a distinctive and interesting two-tiered waterfall in the Nydri-Ófæru river that drops into Eldgjá Canyon in Skaftártunguafréttur. The lower falls were once spanned by a natural stone arch, but this collapsed into the river during a thaw in spring 1993. The waterfall cascades over the edge of the canyon in three stages and its upper area is bordered by a splendid arch. Grænihryggur (Green Backbone) - Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Grænihryggur (Green Backbone) - Fjallabak Nature Reserve. The Fjallabak region takes its name from the numerous wild and rugged mountains with deeply incised valleys, which are found there. The topography of the Torfajökull, central volcano found within the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, is a direct result of the region being the largest rhyolite (liparite) area in Iceland and the largest geothermal area (after Grímsvötn in Vatnajökul). The Torfajökul central volcano is an active volcanic system, but is now in a declining fumarolic stage as exemplified by numerous fumaroles and hot springs. The hot pools at Landmannalaugar are but one of many manifestations of geothermal activity in the area, which also tends to alter the minerals in the rocks, causing the beautiful colour variations from red and yellow to blue and green, a good example being Brennisteinsalda. Geologists believe that the Torfajökull central volcano is a caldera, the rim being Háalda, Sudurnámur, Nordur Barmur, Torfajökull, Kaldaklofsfjöll and Ljósártungur.

Obsidian is black and glassy, and forms when rhyolite cools very quickly. The surroundings of this area are not only colourful, but also filled with many hot springs, steam vents, boiling mud pits and ice caves. Despite the hard ice, there is actually geothermal activity happening under the surface so it is not recommended to enter the caves.

Kerlingarfjöll, Geothermal area in the highlands Kerlingarfjöll (1,477 m (4,846 ft)) is a mountain range in Iceland situated in the Highlands of Iceland near the Kjölur highland road. The volcanic origin of these mountains is evidenced by the numerous hot springs and rivulets in the area. And indeed, they are part of a large volcano system of 100km² (38.6 square mile). The volcanoes of the range are tuyas. The earth is shimmering red in this area because of the volcanic rhyolite stone the mountains are composed of. Minerals that have emerged from the hot springs also color the ground yellow, red and green.
